The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office have issued a significant weather warning as a wave of intense heat sweeps across England. With temperatures forecast to reach the early to mid-30s °C by Monday, an amber heat-health alert (HHA) has been issued for five regions: East Midlands, South East, South West, London, and East of England. A yellow alert is also in effect for Yorkshire and Humber and the West Midlands.
These alerts will be in place from 12 noon on Friday 27 June until 6pm on Tuesday 1 July.
An amber alert means that weather-related health impacts are likely to be felt across the wider population. Vulnerable groups such as older adults and people with underlying health conditions, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, are particularly at risk.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, urged the public to remain cautious:
“We have already seen a spell of hot weather last week and temperatures are once again set to increase in the coming days… Heat, especially at the sort of temperatures we are likely to see at the beginning of next week, can result in serious health outcomes across the population, especially for older adults or those with pre-existing health conditions.”
