Government Invests in Farming Tech to Help British Farmers Grow More, Waste Less, and Protect Nature

As part of the wider Plan for Change, the government is supporting projects that are developing technologies to help farmers boost food production, increase their profits, and protect nature — through a major investment of over £45 million.

From robots gently picking fruit to avoid damage, to wearable health monitors for cows and sheep that help catch health issues early, to smarter irrigation systems that use less water — and even disease-resistant crops that could reduce pesticide use and improve yields — these ideas and inventions could change the way our food is grown for the better.

This funding is being split across three competitions:

  1. Accelerating Development of Practices and Technologies (ADOPT) – starting April 28. This £20.6 million competition gives farmers the opportunity to test new technologies in real-world conditions on their own farms.
  2. Farming Innovation Programme (FIP): Reducing Emissions – starting May 5. This £12.5 million fund supports research into ways farmers can cut down emissions, making their farms more sustainable and helping tackle climate change.
  3. Farming Innovation Programme (FIP): Precision Breeding – starting May 5. Another £12.5 million will go toward projects using precision breeding to improve crop yields, reduce the use of chemicals, and make crops more resistant to disease.

Investing in farmers and the latest technologies will help build a more secure, sustainable, and climate-resilient food system. As Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner said: “This £45 million will support farmers with technology to boost food production, profits and the rural economy.”
